Special
Times began his career with a convincing win at Santa
Anita. That performance, and his apparent gifts, prompted a
$5 million offer for the strapping Golden Eagle Farm Ky.
Bred. He returned nineteen days later as the odds-on-choice in
Santa Anita's 1 1/8 M. Sham Stakes. Breaking last again,
Special Times closed with a rush for 3rd, and was lengths
in front soon past the wire. Their esteem for the horse
confirmed, Baffert and Stevens then considered Special
Times with Point Given as their main Triple Crown
hopeful.
Although
Special Times was unseasoned and still physically
immature, he possessed unmistaken talent, a classic
pedigree, and presence. His sire, Seeking The Gold,
was the world's leading stallion the previous year, and also
sired that year's champion, Dubai Millennium,
with whom Special Times shared other similarities. Both were
products of impeccably bred Northern Dancer-line mares that
excelled on the racecourse. There was much physical resemblance
as well. Unlike most Seeking the Golds, Dubai Millennium and
Special Times were tall, correct, imposing sorts who took the
eye.
In
their endeavor to play catch up, Special Times was trained
more aggressively prior to his third start. Competing that day
against Congaree, Special Times was injured while bucking
shins. What seemed then as a minor setback, would effectively
end a career of likely consequence.
